8 killed, 40 wounded in suicide bombing in heavily guarded part of Kabul as officials meet.

KABUL, Afghanistan - A suicide car bomber struck a heavily guarded neighbourhood Tuesday near the home of a former Afghan vice-president and a hotel favoured by Westerners, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens.
The brazen suicide attack underscored the precarious security situation in the heart of the Afghan capital. The blast was heard at the Foreign Ministry where officials and diplomats met to discuss government corruption.
Security officials at the scene suspect the bomber was going after the home of former vice-president Ahmad Zia Massoud - the brother of famed anti-Taliban fighter Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was killed by al-Qaida two days before the Sept. 11 attacks.
"Of course we were the target," said Shah Asmat, an aide to the former vice-president. "Before, the Taliban killed Massoud. Now, they tried to kill his brother."
Afghan President Hamid Karzai, during a speech he delivered at the conference on corruption, said two of Massoud's guards were among those killed in the explosion.
Karzai condemned the bombing in a statement released later and ordered officials to find those responsible.
"This terrorist attack, which killed and wounded innocent civilians, was an attack on humanity and Islam," Karzai said.
Four men and four women died in the suicide blast, Ministry of Interior spokesman Zemeri Bashary said, adding about 40 others were wounded.
In other violence across Afghanistan, two Afghan National Army soldiers were killed in Helmand province when a suicide bomber on a motorbike attacked a joint vehicle patrol of Afghan and international forces, said Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence. Two other Afghan soldiers were wounded in the afternoon attack in Helmand's Sangin district, he said.
NATO said a U.S. service member was killed in a bombing in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, but it did not provide further details and it was unclear whether the Afghan and U.S. casualties were from the same incident.
Separately, in the eastern province of Paktia, five Afghans and a Nepalese national were killed in an explosion, said Gen. Azizdin Wardak, provincial police chief.
The midmorning attack in Kabul's congested Wazir Akbar Khan district slightly damaged the Heetal Hotel, which is owned by the son of Burhanuddin Rabbani, who served as president of Afghanistan from 1992 until 1996. No hotel guests were among the dead or wounded.
Three homes, including the former vice-president's, were severely damaged and windows in nearby buildings were shattered. A large cloud of dark grey smoke rose from the area as firefighters worked to extinguish flames.
A witness at the scene, a 22-year-old English student at Kabul University, reported seeing a black, four-wheel drive vehicle near the hotel.
"It drove very slowly to the checkpoint," said Hamayun Azizi. "And then it blew up."
The explosion flipped the vehicle, which landed upside down about 10 yards (meters) from the blast site.
It was heard a few miles (kilometres) away by about 200 people gathered at the Foreign Ministry for a three-day conference on corruption in the Afghan government. Those at the conference paused for a moment after the blast. After a delay, the event began with Karzai's speech.

Explosions in Baghdad, Mosul kill 9 people
By Sameer N. Yacoub, The Associated Press
BAGHDAD - A barrage of bombings killed nine people in two of Iraq's largest cities Tuesday, stoking Iraqis' anger that insurgents continue to slip past security forces amid looming national elections and the U.S. military's planned exit.
The explosions in Baghdad and Mosul come on the heels of last week's horrific suicide bombings in the Iraqi capital that killed 127 people and wounded more than 500. Those blasts intensified pressure on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to improve security as he heads into key elections early next year.

Suicide blast kills 33, wounds 60 near home of Pakistani lawmaker, many shops destroyed
By Khalid Tanveer, The Associated Press
DERA GHAZI KHAN, Pakistan - A suicide car bomb exploded in a market close to the home of a politician in Pakistan's most populous province Tuesday, killing 33 people and wounding 60 others.
The blast in the Punjabi town of Dera Ghazi Khan was the latest in a series of attacks by Taliban militants avenging an army offensive against insurgents in the northwest. More than 500 people have been killed.
The attacker detonated his explosives outside the house of the lawmaker, who was not at home at the time. Most of the dead and injured were people shopping or working at the market. It was unclear whether the bomber targeted the politician's home or the market.
The attack badly damaged the house and several nearby shops and buildings, including a mosque and bank.
As night fell, people searched through the debris for survivors trapped under the rubble.
"The whole market has collapsed," said Raza Khan, a local resident. "There is smoke and people running here and there."
Rescue official Natiq Hayat said 33 people were killed and 60 wounded. Government official Hasan Iqbal said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

KILLING WORSHIPPERS IN MASJIDS IS JIHAD?!
Gunmen opened fire at a mosque close to Pakistan's army headquarters during Friday prayers before blowing themselves up, killing at least 36 people, including six military officers.
An intelligence official said 70 others were wounded in Friday's suicide bombing, which occurred in the city of Rawalpindi, just a few kilometres outside the capital of Islamabad.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the media on the record.
A local television station reported the Pakistani Taliban had claimed responsibility.
A military statement said four attackers hurled grenades and then opened fire as they rushed toward the mosque located on Parade Lane in a military residential colony, just a few kilometres from the capital.
Two suicide bombers then blew themselves up inside, while the other two militants were killed in an exchange of gunfire, the statement said.
Military officials killed
Among those killed were a major-general, a brigadier, two lieutenant colonels, one major and a retired major as well as three regular soldiers, military spokesman Maj.-Gen. Athar Abbas said.
The attack began when attackers staged an explosion at a checkpoint at an army installation near the military headquarters in Rawalpindi.
Witnesses said the attackers entered the mosque carrying hand grenades, automatic weapons and ammunition belts slung around their shoulders, and opened fire on the 200 worshippers.
Nasir Ali Sheikh said he saw the attackers as he walked there to pray and witnessed the attack.
"They were killing people like animals," he said. "I couldn't understand what was happening."
The attack was the third in the city of Rawalpindi in nearly two months, and the latest in a wave of violence since the country launched an offensive in mid-October against Taliban militants in the restive area of South Waziristan near the border with Afghanistan.
Officials estimate militant attacks have killed as many as 400 people since October.

COMMENTS:
In WHOSE sick, twisted, ignorant mind could killing Muslims INSIDE a Masjid be in accordance with Islam? This particular case is just the most recent one - SO MANY of these have happened and I hear nothing from my people.
How in the name of Allah, Most Just, is this Jihad? If you cannot take the life of the non Muslim, non combatant HOW by the name of Allah, Most Just, do you think you can take the life of Muslim CHILDREN in this manner?
Worse, to shed blood INSIDE the Masjid, where the name of Allah, Most Just, is taken is no different than those vile and wretched men who broke into the house of Uthman (RA) and killed him in his own home - the fact that he was Uthman (RA) one of the Asharah Mubasharah made no difference to them because they throw away Allah as they throw away their Islam.
WHAT could you POSSIBLY say on the Day of Resurrection?
WHERE are the Muslim voices condemning these attacks in Masajid and against women and children in marketplaces?
How FOOLISH do we look as a community when we protest carpet bombings by foreign forces but stay silent when a Muslim takes the name of Allah and blows up a Masjid along with its worshippers? Do you not think there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with that?
Aoodhubillah!
